Nic & Wes Builders Pte Ltd is a home-grown design & build company that specialises in creating tailor-made lifestyle homes with about 90% of their portfolio focusing on landed residential homes. It began as a vision put into action through founders, husband and wife team, Brian and Jude Kow who as homeowners played an integral part in the building and designing of their own homes.

Through their home-build journeys in the early 90s, they faced the ups and downs of having to deal with multiple separate entities that being the contractor, the interior designer, the architect and the engineer. Being part of that integral equation, Brian and Jude felt a void in not only having to bring these parties together but also having to personally manage the home-build from start to end. It was evident that multiple personalities could easily clash and dominate if all we’re not in sync which brought about delays, miscommunication and escalating hidden costs.

The hands-on experience they gathered coupled with a passion to create not just houses but homes inspired Brian and Jude to ultimately set up Nic & Wes Builders in 2002 to simplify that wheel for homeowners like themselves.

Nic & Wes Builders Pte Ltd, named after their two children, completes the symbol of home – for home is where the family is. And with any Nic & Wes home, it goes beyond just brick and mortar but is created with heart as well.

Ultra-Modern Icon of the East

Located on a main road, the house stands out instantly with its unorthodox curved lines that drew inspiration from an iconic local dish – the Chili Crab. The captivating curved “claw” on the facade creates a unique character for the house. The two-storey house has a non-standard multi-faceted roof design that needed special attention to construction details to avoid unnecessary problems in the future.

“With a multi-faceted roof design, it is easy to put emphasis on its aesthetic without taking into account the effects of rainfall and water dispersion but through experience, it is something that we fluently grasp and work closely with our relevant appointed architect and engineer to ensure that rainwater is carefully channeled to the respective outlets, minimizing any potential for clogging, ponding, or backflow which in time will result in internal leakage,” the builder explains.

Marine motifs, besides the curved crab’s claw, can be found also on the laser-cut gate that mimics the foliage of luscious seaweed moving to the currents on the seafloor and the surrounding boundary wall that features an undulated wave-like flow with a juxtaposition of stone and glass.

The harmonious monochromatic facade, a color palette that can be seen throughout the whole house, creates an elegant and refined look for the ultra-modern home exterior.

Asiatic Contemporary

The house is located in a residential neighbourhood, on a lot with special characteristics, one of them is its unusual elongated proportion.

At first, the clients wanted an intimate retreat for their retirement. The discussions started with the intention of a makeover or minor addition and alteration in the centre and later evolved into a complete rebuild. The preferred look of the house also progressed from a black and white theme into a modern contemporary look which the owners preferred.

The owners wanted their dream home to feature a hotel-like look and feel because they travel a lot and enjoy that kind of leisure, but they also wanted a home that has spaces for gatherings with friends and family. Besides this, the clients are avid collectors of art and memorabilia from their travels, so the house has to be withal an “art gallery”.

The result of the design process was a 3-storey home with a distinctive functional plan that can comprise all the owner’s needs and wishes.

With an extended experience that spans over 20 years of transforming people’s dreams into reality, Nic & Wes Builders gets a lot of special requirements from their clients. Each house is unique in its own way, reflecting the owner’s personality and tastes, no matter how eccentric. In this case, as the builder reveals, it was an interesting one: bringing Bali to Singapore.

The inspiration for the interior and exterior design was, therefore, the Bali experience, with luxuriant plants and natural materials to create a tranquil and intimate private sanctuary.

The entrance conducts toward a protected yet mysterious feeling, like entering into an unknown forest. You never know what surprises you might find there. The house resembles a resort where you can unwind, relax, and recharge… away from the hustle and bustle of the hectic city life.
